grocer & grind, bali

pretty decent food at a quiet corner in seminyak, bali. we past this place on the way to the potato head the night before, and ended up at this place when hungry for a spot of dinner. a mix of an air-conditioned cafe with a deli and cake counter, as well as an open-air pizza place, this place was great for a quiet dinner, and had a pretty extensive menu spanning indonesian food to pizzas and grills.

we stuck to the western portion of the menu this time, starting with appetisers of calamari and braised pork belly, as well as a grilled filet mignon and a chicken-avocado pizza. the calamari was standard fare, and the pork belly – not really my sort of thing but the partner really likes it – went down easily enough, tender and moist. they came over sauteed bell peppers which were good at cleansing the palate.

the filet mignon was pretty impressive though – incredibly tender and juicy, and while it came with a choice of sauce – I chose pepper, which was pretty good – it didn’t need any adulteration. it cut through neatly and smoothly, cooked perfectly to medium-rare, and was well-beefy. we didn’t expected quite this standard of cooking.

by the time we started on the pizza, we were quite nearly stuffed – but we plowed on. it was well-seasoned, with enough sauce and bits of chicken and avocado strewn over the top, and a well-spotted crust with good char. this place, incidentally, has a wood-fired oven (which is naturally impressive and almost always a sign of good things to come) and it shows: the crust was tasty and addictive in the way it should be, and crisp-crunchy at the edges.

quite a good meal – I reckon this would be an easy friday night meal after work sort of place if I lived here – service is friendly and prices quite reasonable (not terribly cheap, but inexpensive for the quality). the place was surprisingly empty, but that’s likely because it’s low-season for travel in bali when we were there in early march. get the beef if you try this place out!

  1. Hi there, if you are ever back in town, check out their new Sanur venue. The cocktail bar is lovely and I hear an Echo Beach ‘GG’ is coming later in the year too :)
