the lokal, bukit pasoh

eh-alright brunch food at this newish brunch place at bukit pasoh. it’s a menu of rather typical cafe-style food, as well as an assemble-your-own-breakfast section of breakfast meats. I can’t say I was impressed – service was rather spotty, even though the place is small – and the food was pretty normal-going.

if you’re in the neighborhood, and there are seats – then it’s an option for a meal. but if there’s a queue – well, I can’t say I’d be bothered.

.

there was a pretty large group of us, and we managed to cover most of the menu. to be fair, most of it is middling decent – my salad of pomegranate, quinoa and pumpkin was a good mix of sweet and savory flavors (though I wished the pumpkin was a little more tender), and a sandwich of chicken was generously stuffed with meat and veg between crusty ciabatta.

the assemble-your-own-sides menu had things like smoked mackerel (which you don’t get much here, but I love from my days in london) and sauteed mushrooms, both of which came well cooked – but I thought in portions too small for the price.

I don’t want to bore you, there were things we thought could have been better done: a berry smoothie was full of seeds (which is generally okay in moderation, but quite overwhelming otherwise), the house-made chocolate-peanut spread was clearly full of over-toasted, burnt peanuts ground up into a charred mess, and the avocado-ricotta dish needed quite a bit more seasoning (it would have been perfect otherwise, with a good mix of flavor and textures – ask for salt).

but a dessert of sticky date pudding, served hot with caramel sauce and with ice cream, was slightly redeeming, with good flavor despite a small portion.

I find it difficult to say much about this place – I don’t dislike it, but there’s nothing about it that invites further description. it’s a nice-looking enough cafe to sit down with friends and have a chit-chat, and it’s certainly conveniently located at bukit pasoh – but with the sheer variety of cafes we have these days, it needs a little more charisma to be a repeat choice.

  1. It’s always sad when you hope a meal will be good and it really just isn’t … at least the pudding was a redeeming feature :) And I like the idea of a peanut chocolate spread, I might have to try making that!
